Bryan Hodgson Departs South Florida for Providence Coaching Role After NCAA Tournament Appearance

Olean native Bryan Hodgson has capped off a whirlwind March Madness run with a major career milestone. After leading the South Florida Bulls through a historic season, Hodgson was officially introduced as the new head men’s basketball coach at Providence College this past Sunday. The move follows a stellar 25-8 campaign where Hodgson returned USF to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2012.

A Meaningful Homecoming at KeyBank Center

For Hodgson, the tournament was more than just a professional achievement; it was a deeply personal homecoming to Western New York. Entering the bracket as an 11 seed, the Bulls faced the No. 6 Louisville Cardinals at Buffalo’s KeyBank Center. Although South Florida narrowly fell 83-79, the game provided a rare opportunity for Hodgson’s parents to witness his success in person. His father, who is battling dementia, was in the stands to see his son lead on a national stage. Hodgson reflected on the moment with the integrity and community focus Western New Yorkers are known for, stating he could never truly repay his players for providing his family such a profound moment of joy.

Building a Legacy in Western New York and Beyond

Hodgson’s rise to a high-major program like Providence is a testament to his roots in the regional basketball scene. His journey began as a captain at Jamestown Community College before he graduated from Fredonia State University. These early years in the Southern Tier laid the foundation for his reputation as a tireless recruiter and tactician.

Local fans most notably remember Hodgson for his instrumental role at the University at Buffalo. Serving as a key assistant under Nate Oats, Hodgson helped transform the Bulls into a Mid-American Conference powerhouse, securing five MAC titles and three NCAA tournament bids. He followed Oats to Alabama, continuing that success with three additional tournament appearances before taking his first head coaching role at Arkansas State. Now, with a career head coaching record of 70-37 (.654), Hodgson takes his local grit to the Big East.
