Predawn Electrical Fire in Amherst Challenges Local Crews, No Injuries Reported
AMHERST, NY – Local emergency services were put to the test early Saturday morning as a hazardous predawn fire broke out on Palmdale Drive near Maple Road in Amherst. The incident, caused by arcing electrical wires, posed significant dangers but was swiftly contained by a coordinated response from Western New York fire departments, preventing its spread to nearby homes.
According to the Main-Transit Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the scene around 5:06 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a perilous situation: live power lines burning on the ground, with a fence already engulfed in flames. This immediate danger necessitated a cautious approach to ensure the safety of both residents and emergency personnel.
Responding firefighters from Main-Transit adopted a strategic distance, prioritizing safety until the electrical power to the affected lines was successfully shut off. This crucial action was pivotal in preventing the blaze from escalating and spreading further to surrounding residential properties. The swift and professional emergency response was bolstered by the arrival of the Clarence Center Volunteer Fire Company, acting as the FAST team, along with assistance from the East Amherst Fire Department and the Harris Hill Volunteer Fire Company. Following the successful containment, officials conducted a preliminary damage assessment. The estimated property damage from the electrical wire fire is approximately $25,000.
