The Western New York community is preparing for a landmark tradition as the 64th Annual Variety Kids Telethon returns later this month. This year, the stage at the Variety Club Headquarters in Lancaster will host a lineup of storied talent, but for saxophonist Will Holton, the performance is more than just a gig—it is a tribute to the medical professionals who saved his life.
A Medical Journey Defined by Gratitude
Holton’s connection to the cause is deeply rooted in his childhood. Born with congenital heart disease involving four heart murmurs, his early years were a gauntlet of medical crises. His survival, he says, is a direct result of the specialized care provided by Golisano Children’s Hospital.
“Due to Children’s Hospital, I’m here today,” Holton shared during a recent interview. “Later down the road, I was diagnosed with spinal meningitis and went into a coma for three to four days. Doctors told my family that even if I survived, the complications could be severe. I recovered, and I know that without their care, I wouldn’t be here. It just feels right to give back using my musical talents.”
Philanthropy and the Mission of Pediatric Research
Holton’s commitment to the region goes beyond the telethon stage. He consistently donates proceeds from his Love Cadenza concert series to local causes, urging his fellow musicians and the broader Buffalo community to recognize the urgency of the mission.
“Every little bit helps because our kids truly need it. With new diseases and ailments emerging, financial contributions are vital for pediatric research,” Holton explained. He emphasizes that the telethon is a critical engine for funding the breakthroughs that save young lives across Western New York.
‘Always’: A Song of Perseverance
For his featured performance, Holton has selected a piece that mirrors his life’s trajectory: an original composition titled “Always.” As the first song he ever wrote, it symbolizes the struggle and eventual triumph of his infancy.
“When I wrote that song, it was like a challenge,” Holton said. “It reflects me as a baby, fighting that challenge alongside my parents’ prayers and the dedication of the staff at Children’s Hospital.”
Event Details: Supporting WNY’s Longest-Running Tradition
