PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — In a long-awaited public appearance that captured the attention of fans across the country—including the many Western New York travelers who frequent the Great Smoky Mountains—global icon Dolly Parton graced Dollywood’s opening day to signal the start of the theme park’s 41st season. The beloved entertainer used the platform not only to kick off the festivities but to share deeply personal updates regarding her journey through grief and her upcoming professional milestones.
A Year of Resilience and Personal Reflection
Speaking candidly to the assembled crowd, Parton provided an update on her well-being following a challenging year. It has been approximately one year since the passing of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who died last March. Parton shared her experience navigating a period of intense grief and subsequent health struggles that had previously sidelined her from the public eye and touring circuit.
During the event, Eugene Naughton, president of The Dollywood Company, joined the singer on stage. Displaying her trademark wit, Parton joked about Naughton possibly being her “new husband,” before movingly reaffirming her lifelong devotion to Carl Dean. “I think I’ll only ever be married but once,” she remarked. “I think Carl Dean is waiting for me on the other side… he’d be saying, ‘Who’s that little pisser? You leave him outside the gates!'”
Addressing her recent absence, she noted that the emotional toll of her loss had physical consequences. “I just kind of got wore down and wore out grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on,” Parton admitted. “I just got myself to where I needed to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally, and physically. But all is good, it didn’t slow me down!”
Creative Horizons: Broadway and the Nashville Museum
While she may have stepped back from the stage temporarily, Parton’s creative output has remained prolific behind the scenes. She confirmed she has been focusing heavily on a new Broadway musical, expanding the score and refining the production. Furthermore, development continues on Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum in Nashville, a project aimed at preserving her storied legacy for future generations.
“I’ve been doing a lot of writing, a lot of thinking, a lot of praying, and a lot of getting ready for a lot of new stuff coming up,” she told the audience. “Be ready for me, I ain’t done!”
