Dunkirk Man Facing Attempted Murder Charge Following Officer-Involved Shooting

DUNKIRK, N.Y. — A Western New York man is facing severe legal consequences following a violent confrontation with local law enforcement. Christopher M. Marcinkowski, 39, was arraigned Tuesday on a new charge of Attempted Murder in the 1st Degree, stemming from an incident that left a Dunkirk police officer wounded and a neighborhood in a state of high alert.

As part of our commitment at the Lake Erie Times to providing in-depth coverage of regional safety and justice, reporter William Strasmore has been tracking the developments of this case, which highlights the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement during narcotics investigations in Chautauqua County.

Details of the Franklin Street Standoff

The incident began on the morning of March 24, around 6:30 a.m. Officers with the Dunkirk Police Department arrived at a residence on Franklin Street to execute a search warrant targeting suspected narcotics activity. According to investigators, as the entry team breached the dwelling, Marcinkowski allegedly opened fire.

A Dunkirk police officer was struck in the chest during the initial exchange. Fortunately, the officer was wearing a ballistic vest, which absorbed the majority of the impact. While the officer sustained injuries, they were non-life-threatening. The officer was treated at Brooks Memorial Hospital and has since been released.

The situation escalated into a tense, seven-hour standoff. Authorities report that Marcinkowski took a female hostage and barricaded himself inside the home. Following extensive negotiations with police units, the suspect eventually released the hostage and surrendered without further violence.

Legal Proceedings and Previous Criminal History

During his Tuesday morning appearance in Dunkirk City Court, Marcinkowski saw his legal jeopardy increase significantly. In addition to the attempted murder charge, he faces multiple counts related to illegal firearms. As a convicted felon with a history of federal and state prison sentences for drug and weapon offenses, Marcinkowski is legally barred from possessing any firearms.

The following table summarizes the current primary charges and legal status for the defendant:

Charge Severity/Count Legal Status
Attempted Murder in the 1st Degree 1 Count Remanded; No Bail
Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree 3 Counts $1,000,000 Bail
Prior Convictions Felony Status Firearm Prohibition

The investigation remains active, with the Dunkirk Police Department working alongside regional partners. Prosecutors indicated that additional federal charges are likely as the case moves forward through the Chautauqua County judicial system. Marcinkowski remains in custody at the Chautauqua County Jail.
