A Youngstown resident is facing a series of criminal charges after leading Western New York law enforcement on a high-speed motorcycle pursuit that spanned multiple jurisdictions in Niagara County on Friday evening. The incident, which began as a routine traffic stop, eventually required the assistance of state resources to bring the suspect into custody.
Incident Origins in Cambria
The pursuit initiated at approximately 7:15 p.m. when deputies from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of Ridge Road and Church Road in the Town of Cambria. The operator of the motorcycle, later identified by authorities as 20-year-old Garrett Tong, allegedly refused to yield to emergency lights and sirens, accelerating away from the scene instead.
Pursuit and Apprehension at Artpark
Law enforcement maintained a vehicle pursuit as Tong traveled toward Lewiston. The chase reached its conclusion near the grounds of Artpark State Park. Upon stopping the motorcycle, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office reports that Tong attempted to evade capture by fleeing into the park on foot.
To secure the perimeter and locate the suspect, a New York State Police K-9 unit was deployed to the scene. The K-9 successfully tracked Tong, allowing deputies to take him into custody without further incident.
Legal Charges and Next Steps
Following the arrest, Tong has been hit with a variety of charges related to the evening’s events. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Youngstown man faces the following counts:
- Criminal Possession of Stolen Property
- Obstruction of Governmental Administration
- Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer
- Resisting Arrest
The investigation remains active as authorities process the recovery of the motorcycle and any associated property. As with all criminal matters, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
