The NFTA Transit Police Department is mourning the sudden passing of Kuko, a dedicated Explosives Detection K-9. Kuko was a vital member of the force, serving the Western New York community with the unwavering loyalty and specialized skill characteristic of the region’s elite K-9 units.
Dedicated Service to Western New York
Kuko was assigned to the NFTA Police Department’s Aviation Division, primarily operating out of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Alongside his partner and handler, Officer Janiszeski, Kuko played a critical role in maintaining regional security. The duo was responsible for ensuring the safety of thousands of travelers and residents through their specialized explosives detection work.
The department expressed its deepest condolences to Officer Janiszeski and his family, noting the profound bond shared between a handler and their K-9 partner. The loss is felt deeply across the NFTA Transit Authority and the broader Western New York law enforcement community.
Rigorous Training and Assignment
Kuko’s journey to the front lines began with intensive preparation. In early January of this year, Kuko and Officer Janiszeski traveled to San Antonio, Texas, to undergo the National Explosives Detection Canine Program. This rigorous TSA-led training program is designed to prepare teams for high-stakes environments, focusing on precision and reliability in detecting hazardous materials.
Following their successful graduation, the team was immediately deployed to the NFTA Transit Police K-9 Unit. Despite his relatively short time on active duty, Kuko quickly established himself as a highly capable asset, significantly enhancing the unit’s ability to protect the transit hubs of Buffalo and the surrounding areas.
