New York Seeks Volunteers for Annual ‘Caring For Your Cemetery Day’

As Western New York shakes off the final remnants of winter, the New York State Division of Cemeteries is calling on residents to help preserve local history. The third annual ‘Caring For Your Cemetery Day’ is set to return this April, offering a unique opportunity for Buffalo and WNY community members to honor those who came before us while strengthening our neighborhood bonds. Scheduled for Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26, these events serve as a vital transition for local grounds heading into the spring season.

The Importance of Cemetery Upkeep in our Communities

Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley highlighted the significance of these preservation efforts, noting that cemeteries serve as essential municipal centers rich in local culture. “Their beautification and upkeep are critical to ensuring that they remain integral parts of our neighborhoods,” Mosley stated. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with Earth Day celebrations, providing a “clean environment” and gathering necessary community support during a time when extra assistance is most needed.

At the Lake Erie Times, we recognize that these sites are more than just burial grounds; they are archives of Western New York’s ancestral narrative. Proper maintenance ensures these locations are respectful and prepared for significant spring observances, including Mother’s Day and Memorial Day.

Volunteer Tasks and Activities

The events are designed for volunteers of all skill levels. Participants will be guided through light tasks that make a substantial difference in the aesthetic and structural integrity of the grounds. Volunteers can expect to assist with:

  • Debris and trash removal to restore the natural beauty of the landscape.
  • Clearing downed branches, weeds, and invasive overgrowth.
  • Removing weathered seasonal decorations.
  • Planting new flowers and scattering grass seed to encourage lush lawns.
  • General beautification efforts to ensure a peaceful environment for visitors.
