A routine patrol by Amherst authorities led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of a Buffalo resident late Friday night. The incident, which unfolded at a local motel, highlights the ongoing coordination between Western New York law enforcement agencies to track and recover stolen property across the region.
James Kenner, 22, of Buffalo, faces multiple charges following the investigation. According to the Amherst Police Department, Kenner has been charged with one felony count of criminal possession of stolen property and a misdemeanor count of unauthorized use of a vehicle. The arrest concluded a search that began earlier that day when the vehicle was first reported missing.
The discovery occurred around 8:00 p.m. when an Amherst detective identified the vehicle in a motel parking lot near the 3600 block of Main Street, located near the Bailey Avenue intersection. This specific corridor has been a point of interest for local officials lately; notably, Amherst leaders have been weighing a 2.5% bed tax on hotels and short-term rentals in the area to address municipal needs and oversight.
Law enforcement utilized motel surveillance footage to observe a suspect entering one of the guest rooms. “Officers responded to the room and interviewed the suspect,” the department confirmed in a statement issued Sunday evening. Following the identification, Kenner was taken into custody.
Kenner was arraigned in Amherst Town Court and is currently being held at the Erie County Holding Center. While a review of the New York State Unified Court System records currently offers no further details on future court appearances, the case remains under the jurisdiction of local prosecutors.
