Mount Calvary Cemetery Breaks Ground on Modern Glass Cremation Complex in Cheektowaga

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — As the landscape of memorialization shifts across Western New York, Mount Calvary Cemetery is taking a transparent step toward the future. The historic cemetery has officially broken ground on a new all-glass cremation niche complex, signaling a modern evolution for one of the region’s most prominent final resting places.

Construction crews began work Tuesday on the St. Matthew Niche, the inaugural structure of the “Garden of Evangelists” complex. Positioned adjacent to the cemetery’s iconic historic bell tower, the project is designed to bridge the gap between Cheektowaga’s rich heritage and contemporary aesthetic preferences. Officials expect the St. Matthew building to be completed and open to the community by early summer.

“The first building, St. Matthew, is designed specifically for cremation memorialization. This is not just a building; it is a reimagining of what a cemetery can be,” said Douglas Wasiura, Mount Calvary Cemetery President & CEO. “It will be a space filled with light, dignity, and intention set right next to our historic bell tower, connecting our future to our past.”

The development addresses a growing demand for diverse interment options in the Buffalo-Niagara region. The complex will offer a range of configurations to accommodate single individuals, companions, and family sets. While the interior is defined by its light-filled glass and marble-front niches, the exterior will provide a more traditional granite finish.

William Strasmore, reporting for the Lake Erie Times, notes that this expansion reflects a broader national trend toward cremation, which has seen a steady rise in Western New York over the last decade. By incorporating glass-front designs, Mount Calvary is allowing families to personalize their memorials with photographs and mementos that remain visible to visitors.

While the St. Matthew Niche is the current priority, the long-term vision for the “Garden of Evangelists” includes three additional structures: St. Mark, St. Luke, and St. John. While timelines for these subsequent phases have not been finalized, the cemetery leadership remains committed to evolving alongside the community.

“We are making a commitment that this place will continue to matter,” Wasiura added. “That it will continue to serve, and that it will continue to evolve with the people who call this community home.”
