Man Arrested After Threatening Semi-Truck Driver with Knife on Thruway

BATAVIA, N.Y. — A Jefferson County man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges following a violent road rage confrontation on the New York State Thruway (I-90) that escalated into a physical fight and a knife threat. The incident, which took place in the Batavia stretch of the interstate, highlights growing concerns regarding motorist safety on Western New York’s busiest commuter arteries.

An Abrupt Stop Leads to Interstate Altercation

According to reports from the New York State Police, the incident began on the morning of April 6, around 7:45 a.m. Troopers say 47-year-old Jason S. Wendt, operating a 2022 Ford, came to a sudden and unexpected stop in the flow of traffic. The maneuver left the driver of a Peterbilt tractor-trailer with no time to react, resulting in a rear-end collision.

While the initial crash caused vehicle damage, the situation turned dangerous once both drivers pulled onto the shoulder. As the semi-truck driver exited his cab to assess the damage, Wendt reportedly flung his car door open with enough force to nearly push the truck driver into the path of oncoming highway traffic. What followed was a physical struggle between the two men in the middle of the roadway, yards away from high-speed vehicles.

The confrontation reached a critical point when Wendt allegedly produced a knife, using it to threaten the truck driver during the brawl. State Police arrived on the scene shortly after to de-escalate the situation and take Wendt into custody.

Legal Consequences and Charges

As part of our commitment at the Lake Erie Times to provide in-depth coverage of regional legal proceedings, we have confirmed that Wendt is facing a trio of serious charges. Following his arrest and processing by State Police, he was transported to the Genesee County Jail for a Centralized Arraignment Part (CAP) appearance.

The specific charges filed against Wendt include:

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree (a felony)
  • Menacing in the 2nd Degree
  • Assault in the 3rd Degree
